What is Accessibility?

For this project, I have chosen to define accessibility as “giving equitable access to everyone along the continuum of human ability and experience.” Wide spread access to art, both in the processes of creating and viewing, is important because of the intrinsic values of cultural consumption. Art functions as a mode of connection, protest, storytelling, community, and everything in between. Foundationally, museums are invested in public knowledge and ideals, hosting art that would otherwise be in private collections for a public audience. In the current sphere, creative capital that could benefit communities through the edutainment model is wrought with arbitrary divisions between high and low culture. Artistic institutions ultimately serve the public, but tend to fully cater to only a small part of this audience.
